A unique international art exhibit, based on comic books action figures, is currently touring Israel. "Mutant Superheroes In The Boulevard" is the work of a French photographer who started the project as a form of therapy.

What started as an unusual hobby has turned into a traveling exhibit: Laurent LaGarde puts superhero action figures in front of landmarks. He then photographs them and magnifies the images.

The result is widespread appeal. His superhero series is in demand in Paris, New York, and Tel Aviv. Ironically, though, the project derived from conflict.

Laurent was based in Tel Aviv with his family during Israel's 2006 Lebanon War, and as he faced the prospect of heading into bomb shelters, the action hero project was born as an outlet for fear, stress, and frustration.

Laurent Lagarde, said, "My friends and family in the US and Europe were quite worried for me, so I had to find a way to express my emotion, but also to tell them that over here there's a war, but life is going on, and things are still okay."

He photographed heroes throughout Tel Aviv and, after leaving Israel, continued the project in other world renowned spots. His collection of 75 photos is gaining in popularity among younger and older generations, and now he is back in Israel for a showing.

Rafi Vazanam, Curator, said,"I think we all want to see our own superhero close to us, and when I walked on the avenue, and saw people walking among the the pictures, and saw their favorite superhero, they feel connected to him."

There is no doubt that this series has widespread appeal.

Comic Book Fan, Tel Aviv, said, "(Who was your favorite superhero?) I think it was Superman. (Why?) Of course! He was handsome."

Comic Book Fan, Tel Aviv, said, "Superman ... Because of the costume."

Comic Book Fan, Tel Aviv, said, "I like Batman. He flies."

Rafi Vazanam, Curator, said, "Of course Superman. I'm old fashioned."

Everyone has a favorite hero. Even the artist, who says his is Flash Gordon.

Using popular action figures like Spiderman, Superman, Wonder Woman, and Captain America, the artist has connected the worlds of art, architecture, younger and older generations. For the record, he says his top seller is Wonder Woman on Tel Aviv's Beach. She has my vote too.
