It's estimated four million people in China suffer from cataracts. This is a clouding of the eye, which can lead to blindness if left untreated. The condition is easily cured but many of those afflicted live in remote areas and find it difficult to travel to hospital. The solution? Bring the hospital to the patients!
The Lifeline Express is an eye hospital on wheels. The charity runs four trains containing medical staff and operating theatres. Each year they visit twelve locations across the Chinese mainland and perform over twelve thousand cataract operations free of charge.
