It's been a torrid Spring for the people of Japan. Exactly one month ago, the magnitude 9 earthquake and ensuing tsunami hit the country's northeast, triggering the ongoing nuclear crisis at Fukushima.

Just over 13,000 people have been confirmed dead, with 14,608 still missing. Nearly 50,000 buildings have been fully destroyed, washed away or burnt down. Around 151,000 people are still living in temporary accommodation, after being evacuated from the affected regions.

Meanwhile, radiation leaks at the six-reactor Fukushima Nuclear Plant have yet to be contained, with several reactors in an unstable condition, and a widespread exclusion zone still in place around the plant.

Nearly 160,000 households in the north are without electricity, and at least 210,000 are without running water. Current estimates for the cost of the damage range between 190 and 295 billion US dollars.
