As the country sets the tone to enhance its medical services and combat cancer, CCTV reporter Zhao Yunjie finds out which cancer affects Chinese people most, and what we can do to escape the disease.

Next time you are about to enjoy deep-fried cuisine, hold that thought for a second because what you've swallowed now might come back to haunt you.

At the 21st World Cancer Congress held last August, China's Health Minister Chen Zhu said the death rate from cancer has increased by 80 percent over the past 30 years. Tumors kill 1.8 million people every year.

And 35 percent of such tumors can be attributed to bad living habits.

Gastric cancer, or the cancer of stomach for example, used to top the most fatal cancer list in Japan because the nation enjoyed too much salted food. And colon cancer can be easily found among Americans, because of their high-fat meals.

Of course there is the connections between smoking and lung cancer, which has been the No.1 deadly cancer in China since the 1980s.

While cancer types reflect living habits of individuals, diagnosis and treatment test the medical capacity of a country.

A report by the International Union Against Cancer suggested more than 80 percent of cancer patients in developing countries missed the optimal time for treatment, because they do not have basic medical knowledge and service.

The five-year survival rate, a key indicator for cancer remission, is less than 25 percent among Chinese patients. In western countries, the number is 68.

The crude realities have prompted the Chinese government to step up its efforts in combating cancer. Prevention is their key focus.

A Cancer database has been built. Lectures are held to promote public awareness. Other measures include tobacco control campaigns and creating diet guidelines.

Cancer is described as the most patient killer. It could take twenty to thirty years to progress. Once diagnosed, the chance of survival is really slim.

In order to escape the killer, while governments are doing their job, what you need to do is to treat your body better, and live healthier, starting today.
