More than 230 vintage copies of comic books were auctioned on Sunday at the Shanghai International Commodity Auction Company. The highest starting price reached a shocking 200-thousand Yuan, a million times higher than the original price.
In the final round, the 1957 edition of "Red Cliff" was sold with a hammer price of 15-thousand Yuan, which topped the auction list. And a copy of "Li Guang the General" was successfully sold at 11-thousand Yuan. Several classical chapters from the Three Kingdom epic were also sold at unbelievably high prices.
Mr Gao, Buyer of "Red Cliff", said, "1950's editions are rare, let alone a copy that is in mint condition. It's valuable."
However, there weren't any bids on items that started at prices higher than 8 thousand Yuan, including an extremely rare copy of 1949's Hong Kong Edition of "Mao Zedong's Youth", which started at 200-thousand Yuan. According to one comic book collector, it's not difficult to understand the situation.
Mr Li, Comic Book Collector, said, "The firm set the high starting price because it's rarely seen, but it's too high for the collectors to place a bid."
While vintage comic books are getting popular in the collectors' market, the significantly valuable sources are actually very limited. But on the other hand, as all these items represent, the charm of people's old time favorites is maintaining its appeal in the new century.
