On Friday, a university student was sentenced to death for the murder of a young mother in Xi'an. The Yao Jiaxin case has drawn widespread public attention due to the identity of the killer and his cruel act.

This is the Intermediate People's Court of Xi'an.

A place not commonly associated with promising young musicians.

But on Friday, this was the place where a 21-year-old pianist was given the death sentence.

Judge, Xi'an Intermediate People's Court, said, "The motive is extremely despicable the measures are extremely cruel and the consequence is extremely serious."

At the age of 21, Yao was a student at the Xi'an Conservatory of Music.

While returning home on October 20th last year, he ran into cyclist Zhang Miao.

Yao got out of the car and found the victim trying to memorize his license plate number.

Then he took a knife and repeatedly stabbed the woman.

He later explained that "fear over endless requests for compensation" pushed him into the crime. But that is far from enough to excuse his behavior.

As well as the death penalty, the court also revoked Yao's political rights for life and ordered Yao to pay 45 thousand yuan in compensation to Zhang's family.

Police said Zhang suffered only slight injuries from the traffic accident, including a small fracture to her left leg.

The case drew widespread public attention.

As a well-known Chinese musician said in his micro blog, how can those who do not care for life love music?

And why do some people who've received higher education have such a distorted concept of the world? All this needs to be examined by society and people living within it.
