At the Shanghai world auto show, luxury vehicles are stealing the spotlight. With the purchasing power of Chinese consumers getting stronger, luxury car makers are setting more ambitious plans to earn a bigger share of the Chinese market.

What will you buy if you have 47 million yuan? While many people are still wondering the number of zeros behind that 7, some super-rich Chinese have made their choice: a luxury car.

Priced at 47 million yuan, the One-77 Aston Martin is the most expensive car at the show, with just 77 cars on offer around the world. And for the five cars for the China market, they were pre-ordered before the show opened.

And maybe that can explain why the bosses of the luxury auto manufacturer stayed in China instead of U.S. when the Shanghai and New York auto show are overlapping, to get a better understanding of what Chinese car buyers want, and what they can provide.

When asked whether the limit- purchasing policies in some first tier Chinese cities will affect their sales in China, luxury car bosses are shaking their heads with a reassuring smile.

Meanwhile, experts say the impact is limited and short-lived, and slowing sales will rebound gradually.

China has been the major driving force for luxury car makers during the 2008 financial crisis when the rest of the world shuns luxury purchases. And now with the number of Chinese billionaires are emerging and the whole auto sector becoming more resilient , it seems luxury car makers in China will not just survive, but thrive.
