64th Cannes Film Festival opens

The world's biggest cinema showcase, the Cannes Film Festival, officially opened on Wednesday. Woody Allen's romantic comedy "Midnight in Paris" opened the festival on Wednesday, starring Owen Wilson and Marion Cotillard, as well as French first lady Carla Bruni,were present at the opening ceremony.

Legendary Italian director Bernardo Bertolucci, was awarded the Palme d'Honneur for his contribution to cinema which includes films like 'Last Tango in Paris' and 'The Last Emperor'.

The 2011 competition boasts an impressive roll call of major screen stars, revered directors and relative newcomers, raising expectations among a 4,000-strong press pack in the glamorous Riviera resort. The festival runs through to May 22nd.
