China's tennis tournament develops young talent

Due to the recent success of China's top female tennis players, the sport is gaining popularity in the country. And the Chinese government is making a concerted effort to expand its funding of the game. Sports Scene's Peter Koveos went to Tianjin to see first hand how this is taking place.

China is serving notice that tennis is an important part of its sports future. The Tennis Administrative centre along with numerous sponsors are providing more opportunities for youngsters to play.

Zhang Dongwen, Director of Tennis Administrative Center, said, "Tournaments like this not only help teens improve their tennis skills but also helps them grow as people. Most of China's top players get their start at events like this."

Some of China's top professional players can see how this can help the future stars of the game.

This event can help open the door for many people -- players and coaches alike from all around the world.

This event in Tianjin is one of 16 events to be held this year in China. Two years ago only two events were held.

It's not a stretch to say that many of the participants at the tournament don't realize what goes into an event like this, they just see the simple things in life.

So its tournaments like this that can give the sports next generation of stars a leg up on the competition.
