A grand welcoming ceremony was held for the visiting Chinese President in the Kazak capital Astana. Hu Jintao held talks with Nazarbayev and other Kazak leaders, hoping to make plans for further developing bilateral ties. Both sides are expected to sign cooperation agreements ranging from economic and trade to environmental protection. Energy cooperation is also likely to top the agenda between the resource-rich nation and the world's largest energy consumer.

Hu Jintao will also attend the Shanghai Cooperation Summit in Astana from Wednesday, where he will join leaders from Russia and four Central Asian countries in joint efforts against common challenges. Closer cooperation against terrorism and pragmatic measures to maintain regional peace will be the major topics. Hu Jintao will also visit Russia and Ukraine, and attend the International Economic Forum in St. Petersburg.
