Tensions are heating up in the South China Sea, after Vietnam and the Philippines took unilateral steps there in recent months. Both countries have tried to claim sovereignty over waters China maintains are indisputable components of its own territory.

The disputes are now running even higher, after Vietnam conducted live military drills in the area. Protesters in that country have also staged rallies against China in recent weeks, while a Vietnamese exploration vessel dragged a Chinese fishing boat through the water. That action endangered the fisherman's safety.

Beijing has reiterated its sovereignty over the South China Sea, and criticized Hanoi for trying to damage the nation's maritime rights. China is seeking to resolve the problems through bilateral mechanisms, and peaceful dialogue.
