The new line links China's municipalities of Beijing, Shanghai and Tianjin, across the provinces of Hebei, Shandong, Anhui and Jiangsu. The journey's length has been reduced to less than five hours. Premier Wen Jiabao met members of the station staff and delivered a speech.

He spoke highly of the efforts made by the construction team, and stressed the significance behind the launch of the train. He then boarded the bullet train for its maiden ride, which will take him to the next stop along the line, Langfang city in Hebei province.

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said, "The construction of Beijing-Shanghai High-speed Railway is an important decision made by CPC Central Committee and State Council, it has great significant in improving modern transportation system, promoting economic and social development and meet people's demand for travel. With the efforts by our workers, the construction took only 38 months. It opens a new chapter in the history of Chinese railway construction."

In about half an hour's time, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao will arrive at the second stop on the G1 bullet train, after departing from Beijing South Railway Station. In a speech, the premier spoke about the conductors and service personnel aboard the train. He said staff should enhance their awareness of security, and continuously strive to improve the quality of the service.
