The newly-discovered oil-based mud is on the sea floor near Platform C. It was previously undetected after the oil spill accident in June. This means the total amount spilled exceeds 1,500 barrels. Conoco Phillips says divers will continue their clean up until all the oil has been removed from the seabed.

Mark A. Nelson, vice president of Conoco Phillips China, said, “The total amount of oil-based drilling mud is not yet clear as the cleanup continues. The North China Sea Branch of the State Oceanic Administration is overseeing the company's cleanup efforts.”

One staff member of Maritime Patrol Team, said, "We're monitoring closely the oil sheen on the sea surface, and the direction it's flowing and reporting to the authority."

The latest surveillance result from the maritime authority says, small scale oil belts and oil seepage have been detected at Platform B and C. It is estimated that about 900 square kilometers had been affected by Thursday.
