Over the course of five one-hour episodes, the series counts down 50 of the most powerful, provocative and moving documentaries of the modern age. Spurlock says documentary films are an important part of our society.

Morgan Spurlock said, "Documentaries are a great way to get people involved in a conversation and encourage them to do something even beyond a conversation. You know, we live in a time I think when five companies control 90-percent of what we see, hear, read, watch on TV, see in movie theaters, you name it. So I think this kind of independent voice and this independent vision that's outside of a studio system or outside of corporate influence, where you're not beholden to someone or someone's messaging is incredibly important today."

Throughout the series, critics, fans, filmmakers and their subjects give their views on the films that made the list - including some of the biggest names of the genre, such as Michael Moore.

Spurlock also travels the States to meet some of documentaries' most iconic figures - from maverick directors to unforgettable characters featured in the films.
