The kitten's mother gave birth two and a half weeks ago. However, only recently did the kitten emerge from its outdoor enclosure. Zoo keepers said they first saw the kitten when it poked its tiny head out of the den. The species used to be common in the region, but is now extinct in the wild. The kitten is expected to join Israel's Sand Cat Breeding Program in order to help reintroduce the species into the wild.
