China's Ministry of Civil Affairs published a report yesterday on the charity performance of Chinese cities. It's the first time the ministry has evaluated charities' activities in Chinese cities. The evaluation is known as the "Love GDP" by many.
According to the report, which looks into the years 2008 and 9, Shenzhen city is the most generous when it comes to donating to charity. A resident in Shenzhen is reported to donate close to 400 yuan per year. That's much higher than the average 43.2 yuan, as compiled from the 100 Chinese cities included in the study.
The report also claims six cities, mostly in China's east and south, including Shenzhen, Beijing and Shanghai, each collects more than one billion yuan in charitable donations annually. Meanwhile, more people are showing an interest in volunteering, as there has been a 16 per cent increase in the number of volunteers.
