German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Sunday said the solution to the eurozone debt crisis lied in "more Europe," and called for necessary European Union (EU) treaty changes.

"We want more Europe, stronger rights to intervene. Treaty changes for that should not be a taboo," said Merkel ahead of a summit meeting of European leaders here in Brussels.

However, the German Chancellor cautioned a breakthrough was not expected from Sunday's meeting, during which technical details would be discussed to prepare for final decisions on Wednesday.

"Today, we are preparing for decisions on Wednesday. That's important because we are dealing with a technically complicated process," Merkel said.
