Fernanda Cornejo became the first Ecuadorian to win Miss International in the pageant’s 51 year history. The 22-year-old outshined more than 60 others and received her crown in the central Chinese city of Chengdu. First runner-up Jessica Barboza came close to becoming the seventh Venezuelan to wear the crown, while Mongolian Tug-SU-u Ider-sai-KHAN took third place.

Before the stage was lit, contestants perfected their looks in the final push for the Miss International honor earlier in the afternoon. The backstage tension ran high.

Niina Lavonen from Finnish delegate said: "After the show, it’s the best moment I think. Because all of us are nervous now, being in a rush."

The night began with the Chinese delegate entering the stage in a red evening dress while carrying China’s national flag.

Despite the evening drizzle, the heavily made-up delegates put their best faces forward on an outdoor stage. The pageant queens from around the world showed off their beauty and paraded the stage in evening dresses, national costumes and swimming suits.

After hours of cat-walking, dancing and performing, the judges declared Ecuadorian delegate Fernanda Cornejo the fairest of them all.

Apart from picking the top three beauties, the panel also gave out a long list of awards that included Miss Expressive and "Panda Angel."

Speaking at a hotel after the competition, Cornejo hoped her success would bring glory to her South American country of 15 million people.

Fernanda Cornejo, Miss International 2011, said: "I feel very thankful and excited about the award. I never thought I would win. I never thought I would become first when I came here. I called my mom after I got the award, I was very happy. This is the first time an Ecuadorian won Miss International. I feel I brought glory to my country. I will bring the crown and all the glory back home. Ecuador will be proud of me."

The first Miss International was crowned in 1960 in Long Beach, California. The pageant moved to Japan 12 years later, and has been held in Chengdu since 2009.
