And that spells opportunity for foreign car brands eager for a piece of the booming Chinese car market.

Organizer Jiang Wenbin from 2011 China Import Car Show said: "The number of foreign auto brands attending the import car show this year has climbed to 33 from 20 last year, and it covers all brands that have sales outlets in China. The number of visitors to the car show has been increasing all these years, that shows the market is booming and more and more people like imported cars."

Last year’s show clocked sales of around 400 luxury vehicles. 120,000 people are expected to visit this year’s show.

With sales jumping 32 per cent and 18 million cars sold in 2010, it's no wonder foreign car makers are racing in.

And according to customs data, sales of imported cars rose 42 per cent, year on year, to 234,000 units in the first quarter this year.
