Severe snowfall in western and northern Japan has left at least 53 people dead and injured hundreds more.

Heavy snow has left 53 dead and hundreds injured in several prefectures in western and northern Japan.

Japan's Fire and Disaster Management Agency says the majority of deaths were caused by people slipping while clearing snow from rooftops or roads. Twelve people were killed in Niigata Prefecture, 10 in Hokkaido and nine in Aomori Prefecture. The agency also says more than 700 injuries have been reported.

Officials ask people to take extra caution when leaving home or trying to clear snow. According to the weather forecast, more snow is expected, with conditions worsening on Thursday morning and lasting throughout the weekend.

Japan's Meteorological Agency has issued warnings of road closures and avalanches mainly in western parts of the country. However, there are also serious concerns in northern Japan where people have been living in temporary housing since the 11 March 2011 earthquake and tsunami.

Meanwhile, a number of municipalities blanketed by the heavy snow say they have run out of funds to remove the snow, and are urging the central government for financial assistance.

The central government says it will use last March's surplus of emergency funds and payments towards local governments to assist them.
