The oldest bank in the country, the Bank of China is celebrating its 100th birthday Sunday. Founded in 1912 in Shanghai, the bank was planned to serve as the country's central bank.
After the founding of New China in October, l949, the Bank of China shouldered the responsibilities of managing the country's foreign reserves. In 1994, it became a state-owned commercial bank. In 2006, the Bank of China went public in both Hong Kong and Shanghai.
Its listing in Shanghai was the largest IPO in the Chinese mainland. Now, the Bank of China has over 580 branches worldwide, and currently ranks sixth globally in terms of market capitalization.
