Freezing temperatures have not only caused severe weather conditions inland, but also at sea, in particular in the Bohai Sea in Northeast China.

Freezing temperatures and a frozen sea, a brisk picture in China's Bohai Sea - According to the local oceanic administrator, the amount of sea ice has expanded by almost 30% compared to last year. In some areas, it reaches up to half a meter thick.

But sea ice is not good news for local fishermen. In the city of Laizhou in Shandong province, local fishermen harvested scallops just before the sea froze over. One official tells us how crucial that is

Zhao Guangzhi, dep. director general of Liaoyang Bureau of Ocean and Fisheries, said, "It's extremely crucial to harvest scallops before the sea freezes. We urged fishermen to get the job done before early January. So our losses are limited."

Meanwhile, the National Maritime Environmental Forecasting Center has issued a special BLUE ALERT for sea ice, further north in Liaodong Bay. This could create problems for oil rigs in the sea, but officials say they are monitoring the situation there.
