In Jiaozhou Bay, freezing temperatures have turned the area into a sea of ice. |
Freezing temperatures are making life in and around Jiaozhou Bay miserable. The area is surrounded by more than two hundred square kilometres of sea ice.
For local fishermen, it's been nothing but bad news. Many seashells and sea cucumbers have died from suffocation due to icy conditions, leading to significant economic losses.
A local fisherman said, "The average ice thickness has reached to 15 to 20 centimetres. And my boat has been stucked in the ice and it can not be used any more."

But there has been some relief, with some of the ice melting as tidal waters rise. The North China Sea Marine Forecasting Center of the State Oceanic Administration said the area of sea ice north of Yellow Sea has shrunk a little bit.
But the National Meteorological Center warned on Sunday that a new cold front will sweep large parts of the country from Sunday evening to Tuesday. Strong winds are expected to plunge temperatures by over ten degrees Celsius in some northern areas.
