President Hu Jintao has met with visiting Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper in Beijing.

During Thursday afternoon’s meeting at the Great Hall of the People, Hu Jintao says the China-Canada relationship has seen sound development since the two countries established diplomatic ties in the 1970s.

And the two sides have seen a new phase in their relationship since the 21st century began, as they develop a strategic partnership. He hopes the two countries will follow the Sino-Canadian Joint Declaration, engage in further political exchanges and understandings, and respect each other peoples’ choice of development and core interests. He called for more exchanges between the two peoples, especially young peoples, and the strengthening of cooperation in regional and global affairs, so as to push forward economic recovery and sustainable growth.
