Over the weekend, hundreds of costumed cats and dogs took to the streets of Rio de Janeiro's Copacabana district, for the annual carnival pet parade.

This is the tenth year the "blocao", which roughly translates as "block party", leaves its paw-marks on the pavement of one of Rio's most famous neighborhoods. These big and small creatures wear costumes that range from princesses to super heroes like Batman.

For some participants, it was an excuse to emulate their pets and dress up. The Blocao is part of Rio de Janeiro's annual carnival celebrations, which begin officially next Friday when Mayor Eduardo Paes hands the key to the city to the King Momo, traditionally a big, tall man, who presides over the festivities. The festivities will continue until February 22nd.
