French President Nicolas Sarkozy has resumed his re-election campaign. He's attended a rally in Reuil-Malmaison in the western suburbs of Paris.

Sarkozy told supporters that anyone who travels abroad from France to attend terrorism courses will be punished with imprisonment. He says if he is re-elected, France could leave Europe's border-free Schengen agreement if Europe doesn't decide on a political government to lead Schengen within one year.

His remarks follow this week's incident in Toulouse. Mohamed Merah died in a hail of gunfire after a dramatic 32-hour standoff with police at his apartment.

Merah had carried out attacks in southern France that killed three Jewish schoolchildren, a rabbi and three French paratroopers with close-range shots to the head.
