7.2 M earthquake hits central Chile

A magnitude 7.2 earthquake has hit central Chile, shaking buildings in the capital of Santiago.

Talca City Hall workers repair the power supply of the city in 2010. A 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck central Chile Sunday, in an area hit by an 8.8 earthquake in 2010, the US Geological Survey said.  

The quake struck 103 kilometers north west of the town of Talca at a depth of 10 kilometers.

The government emergency agency, says it is evacuating some areas of the coast as a precaution, although the quake was not expected to generate a tsunami off the coast.

The latest earthquake hit near the same central region that was struck by a massive 8.8 magnitude earthquake in 2010, causing tsnunamis that killed about 500 people.
