In Chengdu, capital of Sichuan province, locals now don't have to line up at traditional library counters to borrow books. Instead, they can turn to the new street library booths.

There are three such booths in the city now - each of which has up to 450 books. The three library booths were put into round-the-clock operation on Monday - this year's World Book Day. With a Smart card or ID card, locals can borrow and return books from any of the three booths. Many are content with the one-minute process. Local officials say the new library booths aim to promote reading and facilitate those who have little time to go to traditional libraries.
