Hanging out with family and friends and embracing nature are perhaps many urbanites'top choices for the weekends.

Catching the tail end of summer, an open air festival has been taking place in the northern suburbs of Beijing, providing people, especially music enthusiasts, a great chance to combine the natural landscape with live performances. CCTV reporter Yang Ran was there.

Staged near the Shuiguan section of the Great Wall in Yanqing County, the event welcomed the most spectators ever in its rather short three year history. They bring their camping equipment, picnic baskets and pets, and enjoy the cool shades of the valley. And their reasons for attending vary.

"I've long wanted to attend an outdoor music festival like this. I first became a fan of the festival's microblog and I luckily won two tickets. "

"I'm a big fan of classical music. And I love the environment very much!"

"I don't go to outdoor music festivals very often, as I found most of them are rock n'roll or pop. I prefer a laid-back atmosphere and pure and relaxed music. That's why I'm here. "

The "Light Cavalry Overture" presented by the Extraordinary Philharmonic Orchestra unveiled a night of classical and jazz. The ensemble took to the stage with a refined combination of western classical pieces and Chinese ballads, featuring baritone Zhao Dengying, tenor Li Zhentao, soprano Ke Lyuwa, and Zhu Liqun.

Then the night saw blues and soul music take over. Three funky bands, Shengzhi Dao Soul Decree Big Band, Yu and the Strangers, and the Big John Blues Band paid homage to predecessors like James Brown and also boasted their own works.

After the first two days of concerts on Saturday and Sunday, the third annual Forest Music Festival will be staged again this weekend, starring the China Opera and Dance Drama Theater Orchestra and the Dunshan Symphonic Wind Orchestra, which is the first and only fully privately-funded orchestra in Chinese mainland. The artists include "Chinese Nightingale" soprano Wu Bixia, tenor Cheng Zhi and bamboo flute maestro Zhang Weiliang.
