The Paralympics opening ceremony has kicked off with display of dancing and a "big bang" on Wednesday night.

Physicist Stephen Hawking opened the event, speaking of the quest for understanding the universe. About 80,000 speculators watched the ceremony entitled Enlightenment.

The show included 73 deaf and disabled professional performers and 68 disabled people among its 3,250 volunteers.

Over the next 11 days, 4,200 athletes from 164 nations will compete in 20 sports. 2.4 million of the available 2.5 million tickets have been sold, while the remaining 100,000 will be released in batches of 10,000 each day.
