Thailand has broken the Guinness World Record for the most people being massaged at one time as part of the opening of Thailand’s Medical Expo 2012.

641 pairs of Thai masseuses turned up to tackle the record. Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra was on hand to hit the gong marking the start of the record attempt. Traditional Thai massages aim to relax and energise the body by stretching and pressuring muscles. After 12 intensive minutes of massage, the record attempt was certified by observers from the Guinness Book of World Records.

The previous record had been held by 263 Australian couples in 2010. The event is part of the opening ceremony of the government-sponsored Thailand Medical Expo 2012, which aims to strengthen and promote the country's medical services.
