It's been a much-anticipated show. Though the designer herself is not in attendance, it's nevertheless drawn the best of Asia's fashion world.

A former figure skater, Wang was born and raised in New York City to Shanghainese parents. And it's clear that this heritage has had an influence on the designer. Among her collection were red dresses aimed squarely at a Chinese clientele that considers it good luck to wear the color during the celebrations.

The show should be no surprise for followers of fashion. Wang made a name for herself specializing in bridal gowns, and her brand is planning to open a grand boutique in Shanghai. But it's not an all-Wang event. Shanghai Fashion week will showcase nearly 40 shows in total. It features 2013 Spring/Summer collections by designers from around the world, though with a particular focus on Chinese names.

Now in its 10th year, Shanghai fashion Week continues to grow in stature. And organizers are confident this trend continues, bringing Shanghai closer to its goal of joining the ranks of fashion capitals like New York, Milan, London and Paris.

Shanghai Fashion Week runs to Wednesday.
