A fire at a garment factory in Bangladesh's capital, Dhaka, has killed at least eight people and injured more than 100.

The fire at the nine-story factory broke out late on Saturday. It started on the ground floor and quickly spread. Firefighters took nearly five hours to extinguish the flames. Most of the victims died as they jumped from the building to escape. Some of the injured are being treated in hospital.

A massive slum fire has killed at least 14 and injured scores on the outskirts of Bangladeshi capital Dhaka, a city with some 5,000 slum areas.

The cause was not immediately clear. A Fire Department Control Room Official said it would not confirm any casualty figures from the factory. Bangladesh has around 4,500 garment factories that make clothes for global brands. Ready-made garments make up 80 percent of the country’s annual exports.
