The animals at London zoo have been extra good this year and so Santa has treated them all to an early Christmas.

Lion cubs Heidi and Indi got their paws on parcels of meat hidden inside Christmas gift boxes, while the penguins were treated to festive fishy treats.

Paul Kybett, Zoo keeper, said, "It's part of their diet, but it's nice when it's all wrapped up and gives them something to play with and rip open."

The zoo's western lowland gorillas dug into their Christmas stockings. Mjukuu, Zaire and Effie delved into gifts of their favourite snacks.

Even the cheeky squirrel monkeys got early presents from Santa, and they ripped apart their Christmas stockings in no time to get at the food.

At Sydney's Taronga Zoo, Santa also arrived early with special gifts.

The Aldabra tortoise tucked into a gift of watermelon carved like a Christmas tree and some lettuce leaves.

The Malayan sunbears couldn't wait to open their presents of nuts and honey hidden inside Christmas wrapping.

A group of excited meerkats played with small colourful christmas balls in the sand and ran in and out of their new toy house.

Biologists say the packaging is designed in a way that allows the animals to use the unique skills they would ordinarily use in the wild.
