Senior officials including New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel are also all backing stricter gun controls.

But gun and ammunition sales have actually soared following the shooting in Newtown. Many people say they've been buying guns for personal protection. And enthusiasts fear a ban on assault weapons is on the way.

North America firearms owner said, "A lot of folks realize that, and started to come in very heavily looking for these weapons. Because they are afraid that they won't be able to buy them any more. I have people who have paid ahead of time for them. They are not even here yet, but they've paid ahead of time for them to make sure that they can get them before the state of Illinois or the United States in general just bans them all together."
