The first heavy snow of the winter has swept through the western and central United States.
In some parts of California, snow cover has reached an average of about 1.5 meters in depth. Air travel and road traffic have been seriously disrupted. To the east in Sierra Nevada, interstate 80, the main route between Sacramento and Reno, was shut for about three hours after snowy roads caused several spinouts, but was reopened later.
Interstate 5 near the Oregon border has been open to cars and truck with snow chains. It was shut down late Tuesday for 12 hours after a 60-car pileup then closed again last Friday when a storm dropped several inches of snow.
