Dancing cop cheers US holiday drivers

Another act that's catching holiday shoppers' attention is a police officer who dances while directing traffic. Sound funny? Absurd? No! It’s a holiday tradition! A US cop in Rhode Island’s largest city Providence uses dance moves and whistle-blowing to direct traffic - and entertain drivers and pedestrians.

Tony Lepore has been showing off his disco and salsa moves on the roads of downtown Providence since 1984. After retired in 1988, he got a call from city officials asking him to rejoin the force... and do his dancing traffic cop routine for the Christmas holiday crowds.

So every year since then, the 65-year-old has signed up as a reserve officer - and walks his unique beat for 10 days. But Lepore says he first began dancing on duty, not out of Christmas cheer, but to take his mind off a boring and frustrating shift during the summer.
