A court in southwest China's Sichuan Province has convicted two Tibetans of intentional homicide for inciting a group of eight people to set themselves on fire.

Lorang Konchok was sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve. The court says he used his status as a high-level Tibetan religious scholar, to convince monks and others to set themselves on fire. His nephew, Lorang Tsering, was sentenced to 10 years in prison. The court found that three people died as a result of the self-immolation plan in 2012.

Meanwhile, 6 ethnic Tibetans were given three to 12 years in prison by a county court in Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in Gansu Province. They were charged with playing negative roles in a local villager's self-immolation in October.

The villager set himself on fire in front of a local shopping center. The defendants obstructed the police as they tried to save the man, who later died because he didn't receive medical treatment in time. The court said it provided interpretors for the defendants to help them understand the proceedings.
