With the seven-day Spring Festival holiday coming to an end, the world's largest annual human migration is back on the move, putting China's transport system to the test again.
Traffic safety conditions were stable as a whole across the country on Thursday. China's Ministry of Transport said there were no long traffic jams. But from Thursday to Saturday, major expressways will witness a rapid increase in private cars.
Traffic management officers with the Ministry of Public Security say they also expect congestion on Friday, the last day of the toll-free period for this Spring Festival holiday.
The Beijing municipal commission of transport said highways in the Chinese capital handled more than 1.2 million trips on Thursday, a 50 percent increase compared with the same period of last year.
The commission also forecast that Friday will have the heaviest traffic in the seven-day holiday. The traffic management administration is reminding drivers to keep calm while traveling. In case of bad weather, people should keep an eye on traffic service information, and drive carefully at a safe distance.
