A US defense official has told CCTV that his country has indeed intercepted two Russian bombers that circled the US island territory of Guam.

But the official has not revealed any details about the model of the bombers and whether they were equipped with nuclear warheads.

Earlier, US military spokeswoman Capt. Kim Bender also said two F-15 fighter jets, operating out of Andersen Air Force Base in Guam, intercepted the Russian TU-95 bombers, which left in a northbound direction. Bender said no further action was taken and declined to give other details, citing security reasons.

The incident occurred shortly before President Obama delivered his State of the Union address, as reported first by the Washington Free Beacon. The newspaper also said the Russian bombers were equipped with nuclear-tipped cruise missiles.

However, the Russian Defense Ministry has denied this. It said the Russian air force has no bombers executing flying missions in the Pacific Ocean. It added that a bomber pilot training is being carried out in Russia's Far East, not in the Pacific Ocean.
