Senior Japanese diplomat Shinsuke Sugiyama has arrived in Beijing, for talks on the Diaoyu Islands dispute and the DPRK's recent nuclear test.

Shinsuke Sugiyama is the head of the Japanese Foreign Ministry's Asian and Oceanic Affairs Bureau. He is expected to meet with China's special representative for Korean Peninsula issues, Wu Dawei, and other officials over the next three days.

Japan is set to ask for China's cooperation in helping the UN Security Council impose new sanctions on the DPRK, following its nuclear test last week.

Also on the agenda is the ongoing Diaoyu Islands dispute. Sugiyama is expected to address Tokyo's concern over a Chinese patrol ship, which Japan says directed weapons-related radars on a Japan's Maritime Self-Defense Force vessel.
