Guest complaints about low water pressure in a Los Angeles hotel have led to a gruesome discovery --- the body of a 21-year old Canadian woman. Elisa Lam from Vancouver travelled alone to Los Angeles on January 26th. She was last seen five days later by workers at the downtown Cecil Hotel. Police are carrying out an investigation.

Elisa Lam of Vancouver, British Columbia, is seen in this undated handout photo provided by the Los Angeles Police Department.

Elisa Lam's body was found Tuesday, 19 days after she was last seen.

Police are calling her death suspicious.

Her body was found wedged in a water tank atop a downtown Los Angeles hotel.

Hotel surveillance footage showed her inside an elevator pushing buttons and sticking her head out the doors, looking in both directions.

Local residents say the neighborhood isn't safe.

LA resident Judy Lin said, "To go out at night, you kind of have to know the neighbourhood, really watch your back. I think it's unfortunate. She probably didn't know what kind of neighbourhood she was in."

A long-time hotel resident said he heard a big noise the day before Lam disappeared. Later on, a water leak was noticed on the fourth floor, the last place she was seen.

Water tested from the hotel did not contain any live bacteria that would cause illness.

Firefighters leave Hotel Cecil after removing a body found inside a water tank on the roof, in Los Angeles, California February 19, 2013.

An autopsy performed Thursday didn't provide definitive answers into whether Elisa Lam was killed or if she fell victim to a bizarre accident.

Officials say further tests are needed.

For now, the only water running is for toilets. Guests are being re-directed elsewhere.

Tourist said, "We have to change because we intend to stay one more night, but the hotel said that no water supply, so we have to move. They said the water broken, so we have to move to another hotel."

Lam's next stop was reportedly Santa Cruz, about 560 kilometers north of Los Angeles.

People who answered calls to her home hung up when asked to speak about her.
