A pro-government Syrian newspaper says opposition fighters have killed 115 police and wounded 50 in a battle over a police academy in the country's north.

The daily Al-Watan reported on Monday that "terrorists committed a massacre" at the academy in Khan al-Asal, in the western outskirts of Aleppo. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, said rebels seized the government complex after entering it with captured tanks. And the battle left at least 120 police and 80 rebels dead.

On Sunday, three mortar shells landed near government buildings in Damascus. No casualties were reported. Rebels have tried in recent months to over-run military bases in northern Syria, but the state media said government troops have secured several towns along the major roads leading to Aleppo.
