According to an official Iraqi television report, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry has arrived in Baghdad to hold talks with Iraqi leaders.
The state-run Iraqia channel said Kerry would press the Iraqi Prime Minister and other senior officials to stop Iranian flights, carrying arms and fighters, from heading to Syria. American officials travelling with him have said Kerry is expected to meet with Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki for discussions on political developments in the region and bilateral relations.
They say Kerry will also ask Maliki and the Iraqi cabinet to reconsider a decision to postpone elections in the provinces of Anbar and Nineveh. Kerry's unexpected visit to Iraq comes after his trip with President Obama to the Middle East. It’s his first visit to Iraq since he took office last February.
