The British Daily Mail has reported that millions of tons of recyclable household garbage are being dumped abroad. The UK government admitted that China, India and Indonesia are the main trash destinations. And most of the garbage is sent to landfills.
The UK has a strict garbage classification system. In some districts, if citizens break the rule, they can be charged up to 1-thousand British Pounds. The report estimated the total recyclable garbage amounted to around 12 million tons. Besides household garbage, the exported trash includes old tires, televisions and computers.
Due to high waste disposal costs, sending it to developing countries may be seen as a better option for the UK. The scale of the trash trading industry has doubled over the past decade. Although the UK requires the shipped garbage to be recycled, the government admitted they could not trace the final destination.
