The city of Ya'an is around 120 kilometers from Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan province. It lies between the Sichuan basin and the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. The city has a population of 1.53 million people.

Ya’an is thought to be the origin of the panda species, and the place where the panda was first discovered. In 2006, the area surrounding Ya’an, a natural panda habitat, was listed as a world natural heritage site.
