Seriously injured girl operated on after earthquake

A 12-year-old girl in Lushan county has received surgery after she was seriously injured during the earthquake. She was successfully treated at the scene, with local medics helped over the telephone by Beijing experts.

It's the first major operation at the quake scene.

Gao Shiqin, was badly hurt when she was buried by rubble in the earthquake.

Her mother and uncles pulled her out of the ruins and took her to a medical team.

14 hours later, the hospital she was taken to decided to operate.

Su Yonglin, vice president of Chengdu PLA Hospital, said, "We found she had internal bleeding. We found her liver was seriously damaged. I arranged an operation."

Many experts took part in the operation because the girl's condition was complicated.

Dr Li Can, Chengdu PLA Hospital, said, "Using the remote consultation system, we got support and guidance from the People's Liberation Army General Hospital."

The operation lasted an hour. It was the family's most difficult time.

But things went well.

Dr Su Jiaqing, Chengdu PLA Hospital, said, "Our operation was a success, we removed her spleen. The patient is now in a stable condition."

The girl's mother says her daughter is clever, with good school grades and is keen on sports. She says she hopes she can continue to enjoy them in the future.
