With the start of the 2013 Giro d’Italia just one day away, Argo-Shimano’s, Ji Cheng is preparing to become the first ever Chinese rider to take part. The 25-year-old set off in the Spanish Vuelta last year, where he made history by becoming the first person from his country to compete in any grand tour race.

Ji is not a total stranger to Italy - he has taken part in the past two editions of the Milan-San Remo. Ji hails from Harbin, and joined Shimano in 2007 and his job will be to try to help the Dutch team’s, German star, John Degenkolb to collect several stage wins.

"As the first Chinese to compete in the three Grand Tours of Europe, I have just calmed down. I hope I don’t get in a state like last year, when I was so excited and nervous in Spain. Now I am, not really relaxed, there’s still some stress, but not like last year,"said Ji Cheng, Team Argos-Shimano Rider. "Instead I am really focused on the race. I’m happy to be the first Chinese rider to participate in the Giro d’Italia. It’s a dream race, you always see it on TV. There are picturesque views, nice climate and Italian food... so finally I’m here. I’m really happy."
