The Mayon Volcano has erupted in the central Philippines, killing at least 5 people including four German hikers and their guide. Another 8 people were injured. Rescue teams and helicopters have been sent to the area.

The restive volcano in the central Bicol region spewed ash on Tuesday morning. The national disaster agency said the ash explosion lasted about 73 seconds. Authorities said the explosion was caused by trapped water and rainfall that entered the crater, but assured residents the volcano had stopped erupting.

Mayon Volcano is one of the most active in the Philippines, and is also a popular tourist destination for hikers.
