The spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, Yang Yi, says China strongly condemns the barbaric killing of a Taiwan fisherman. Yang Yi said the Chinese government had also asked the Philippines to quickly open an investigation to explain the victim’s death.

The 65-year-old Taiwan fisherman, Hong Shi Cheng, was reportedly killed after being shot by the Philippine military near waters where both Taiwan and the Philippines have overlapping jurisdiction. The incident occurred about 170 nautical miles off Taiwan's eastern coast.

Taiwan authorities have issued a statement expressing deep concern over the incident. But they said they wouldn't send out naval ships to avoid further escalation. A marine patrol ship was sent to rescue the fishing boat which lost power after the attack.
